Called NIO ES8 the electric vehicle is a direct competitor for Tesla’s Model X, being an electric SUV with 7 seats!
At the moment the information is limited, but the manufacturer mentions that the ES8 is a performance electric SUV, so we can expect it to flex its muscles in front of Tesla’s Model X, which is one of the fastest SUVs in the world by the way.
Considering the experience with the EP9 electric supercar, NIO was able to create an ultra-fast SUV capable of overtaking the Tesla Model X.
The Nio ES8 is a model with 7 seats with a 2 + 3 + 2 configuration that stands out by having a battery that can be changed quickly.
The bodywork and chassis of the new NIO ES8 are made of aluminum. The electric SUV is equipped with pneumatic suspension and two electric motors – one for each axle.
The battery pack will be removable in order to be replaced with one already charged at special stations, so there is no need to recharge the batteries and waste time. So far, the automakers have focused on developing the most advanced technologies for fast battery charging, especially because they have not identified an efficient business model to give customers the option of replacing the battery instead of charging it.
Nearly 5 meters in length, a wheelbase of over 3 meters and a typical bodywork for an SUV, the new NIO ES8 offers plenty of space on board. Inside we have leather upholstery, digital dashboard, a vertical display on the center console, and a strange “eye-catching” thing above it, which seems to be artificial intelligence, like NOMI in the NIO EVE model, which will represent an on-board companion helping the owner in different situations.
While NIO markets itself a “global automaker” running deals in California and the UK, the company operates mainly via Chinese interests seeing that their first factory will be in China. So it comes to no surprise that their first model targets the Chinese market.
NIO Founder and Chairman, William Li, declared that “Today we unveiled our new production vehicle, the NIO ES8, to the China market. It is another statement of our vision and technical and manufacturing capabilities. It is a best-in-class product that showcases what is possible with electric vehicles. I am proud of our relentless focus on vision and action. From track to road, NIO continues to achieve major milestones every year.”
The NIO ES8 has traveled thousands of kilometers under the most severe conditions at temperatures from -30 Celsius degrees (Yakeshi in Inner Mongolia) to +40 Celsius degrees (Melbourne and Mildura, Australia) and is ready for series production, which will kick off later this year.
