The Arteon’s bodywork style makes the model more driveable in every-day scenarios, especially due to baggage handling becoming much easier. With the rear seats in place, the car has a storage space of over 563 liters, while with them folded the amount of luggage can reach 1557 liters. If you want even more space, the manufacturer promises a wagon version at some point in the future.
The CC suffix was removed from the Arteon name VW preferring a clearer delimitation between the traditional sedan and its sporty variant. Thus, Arteon (reference to the word “Art” in English) is the only logo on the new model’s tailgate. Yes, a tailgate, the new Arteon is giving up on the trunk with classic opening for a solution already successfully used on the Audi A5 Sportback.
VW Arteon will take on the MQB modular platform and the current Passat engines, but will be positioned above in the range, counting on an extrovert design. The external dimensions will be slightly more generous. Arteon is almost 10 cm longer and 4 cm wider than the Passat, which was also 2.8 cm shorter: length 4.86 m, width 1.87 m, height 1.43 m. The wheelbase is 5.1 cm more generous, measuring 2,841 mm.
In terms of safety, Arteon, uses the latest Volkswagen technology to control of cruise speed, which will take care of maps or speed limits.
In addition, the model is equipped with the new version of adaptive lighting when cornering, controlled by GPS, which illuminates the locations around the corner before the driver steers, and the second generation of emergency assistance that will slow and stop the car safely, if the driver has any health problems.
The engine range includes three gasoline variants and the same number of diesels. The entry level model will be driven by the new turbo engine with a displacement of 1.5 liters, 150 hp, and partial deactivation system for two of the four cylinders. Going up on the power scale, the Arteon can be ordered with a turbo engine with a displacement of 2 liters, offered in 190 and 280 hp versions. The last two are available exclusively with DSG7 transmission, which is optional for the 1.5 TSI version.
The Arteon 2.0 TSI, with 280 hp, comes with 4Motion all-wheel drive as standard. The diesel range includes three versions of the acclaimed TDI engine with a displacement of 2 liters, rated at 150, 190 and 240 hp (twin-turbo).
The Arteon model is part of the unprecedented offensive announced by VW for 2017, the year when no less than ten revised or completely new models will be presented, to bring back the German brand into public attention in the post Dieselgate era.
The Volkswagen Arteon will be on sale in Germany from mid-June, as soon as the production starts at the Emden plant. The successor to the CC model will reach other markets starting 2018.
