Nikola One – The Electric Truck that Finally Became Real!

While the American tycoon Elon Musk and his Tesla intend to build electric cars on an industrial scale, another firm has thought to manufacture trucks which will operate with a hybrid engine, powered both by electric energy and gas.

And so we reach Nikola Motors, and its engineers have kept the promise made a while ago when they revealed some 3D images of a truck – that truck was unveiled at an event in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA! Say hello to the Nikola One!
It is real and is meant to forever change the cargo shippers industry, being twice as efficient and twice as faster as a conventional truck. Moreover, since it is electric, it is ecologically safe too!

The Nikola One futuristic truck is equipped with six electric motors with a total output of 1,014 hp and 2,711 Nm of torque, and each electric motor has its own gearbox. Inside the frame a huge pack of lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 320 kWh is placed, which is charged during driving by a system of fuel cells, powered by hydrogen!

With a single tank of hydrogen (100 kg), the truck can travel from 800 to 1,200 miles (1.287 to 1.931 km)! Although it has a complex propulsion, the Nikola One truck is in fact about 900 kg lighter compared to a conventional truck. When it is loaded, it reaches 100 km / h (0-60 mph) in 30 seconds, and has a shorter braking distance than usual.

According to company chief, Trevor Milton, this reduction in weight can be added to the load, which will bring an extra income of about 1,000 dollars per day. The truck has safety systems such as autonomous braking, and 12 video cameras that offer panoramic visibility around the truck.

When will the truck will be offered for sale? Deliveries will begin in 2020, and until then those from Nikola Motors will test the truck and will prepare it for production. The first 5,000 trucks will be built with help from Fitzgerald, and then production will increase to 50,000 trucks per year. Regarding the hydrogen fueling stations, those from Nikola Motors produce hydrogen at its own plant, and from January 2018 will begin construction of 364 stations in the US and Canada.

The truck’s cab was designed to be at least as luxurious as Elon Musk’s Model 3. It has a refrigerator and freezer, air conditioning, a 10-inch dashboard, 4G LTE internet, Wi-Fi, panoramic windscreen, two beds, a microwave and a TV with a diagonal of 42 inches.

The first 5,000 customers who will book a truck like this with just 1,500 dollars (the total price is 375,000 dollars) will get free fuel (hydrogen) for the first 1,000,000 miles (1,600,000 km). A program to rent the trucks will be offered for about 5,000-7,000 dollars a month (depending on equipment), which will involve free fuel, unlimited warranty and service, and at every 72 months, or reaching the figure of one million miles traveled without extra investment, those from Nikola Motors will offer a new truck in the same conditions, in exchange for the old one!

It sounds like a dream for companies dealing in transporting goods, doesn’t it? According to Trevor Milton, the company has already received 4 billion dollars in pre-orders!

Also in 2020, the Nikola Two truck will appear, which will have the same features, but will have a conventional design and will be deprived of space for sleeping.
