MINI continues to amaze audiences with its innovative technologies. This time the British launched a pair of glasses for augmented reality perception.
We know that the MINI brand is one with a broad vision. Likewise, it is a brand oriented towards novelty and connectivity, targeting the young. But we had no idea that MINI would enter the territory of virtual reality. The British will present at the Shanghai Motor Show a glasses prototype that gives the driver a kind of augmented reality experience.
How the future of drivers around the world looks like? They sit on a chair without touching the steering wheel and with glasses on. The car will not have buttons nor will not have a watch on the board, so that all information will be disclosed to the driver directly through virtual glasses. In this way, MINI proposes to start an augmented reality (AR) revolution with a prototype project called MINI Augmented Vision.
“MINI Augmented Vision gives an insight into how intelligent connectivity between a MINI car and eyewear into which relevant content is projected might work in the future. Working with several Qualcomm companies, we have created an interlinked system and augmented reality eyewear with a characteristic MINI design that revolutionize the experience both in and outside the vehicle. This prototype with its customized, interactive functions succeeds in fusing augmented reality with the brand’s trademark sense of lifestyle” explains Dr. Jörg Preißinger, MINI Augmented Vision project-manager.
Using “see through” technology the AR glasses submit relevant information directly in the driver’s field of vision, but without obstructing traffic images in the visual field, thereby helping improve safety and comfort while driving.
The following functions will be shown in the visual field by using MINI Augmented Vision:
Destination, for navigation and transferring it to the car: select the destination when the driver is out of the car and then transfer it to the car.
The first kilometer/last kilometer: navigation display from the current location to the car or from the car to its final destination.
Head-Up Display functions: display speed, speed limits etc. through glasses so that the information is in the driver’s field of vision. The data is always presented in the same place above the steering wheel. Thus, the information is provided without distraction.
Navigation with analog contact and tourist attractions: with arrows “on” route, but also by showing tourist objectives located along the route, as well as open parking spaces. The driver’s attention is still focused on the traffic.
Messaging: a small icon is shown in the glasses when receiving a message. Messages can be read by the car while driving safely via the text-to-speech function.
Image X Ray/transparent parts of the car: a virtual image of the vehicle components (such as pillars and doors) allows the outdoor areas or the car’s hidden objects to be visible.
Augmented Parking: this eases parking by displaying images from the camera placed in the rear view mirror directly on the lenses of the glasses. Thus, distances can be determined easily and clearly.
