Mercedes Benz Reveals a Fully Stocked GLA at Frankfurt This Week

Mercedes Benz had clearly thought about the role of its new GLA mini SUV much before its official revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week. This vehicle is endowed with style, comfort and panache, typically related to Mercedes Benz and as opposed to fundamental thinking Mercedes Benz has refused to give this vehicle an appeal of a mini SUV. Therefore, although we get the size and cabin space of a mini SUV, comfort wise, this car is nothing less than a full sized SUV.

The GLA shares common DNA with the latest CLA sedan and similarities range from exterior design to drive train modifications. Mercedes Benz has installed a four cylindered 2.0 liter direct fuel injected petrol engine displacing 208 BHP along with 258 ft lb of torque. This engine is directly lifted off the CLA sedan along with the automatic start / stop technology. Therefore, huge variations are not possible on both these vehicles apart from their drive dynamics which is expected to be fairly unique to both these cars.

Mercedes Benz confirms that the first generation GLAs will be equipped with their latest 4MATIC AWD technology. This ironically is also the company’s first platform to get a fully integrated variable system. The rear wheel drive train is mated to a seven speed transmission system along with a dual clutch transmission system. The rear axle comprises of an integrated hydraulic multi disk which Mercedes Benz claims is the reason behind the successfully distributed torque within the front and rear axles.

The AWD 4MATIC system makes this vehicle variably powered, which means that 50 percent of its engine juice is transferred to its rear wheels under normal conditions. Mercedes Benz has however confirmed the launch of a front wheel drive train on the GLA fall January. The dimensions of this vehicle make it one of the biggest in class while its competitors in the market are Toyota’s RAV4 and the BMW X1.

Although Mercedes Benz has not offered a test mule for its GLA, experts have driven its cousin – CLA sedan – on road and as both vehicles are expected to feature similar drive train, driving can be compared. Test drivers reported that this SUV reaches 0 – 60 MPH within 6.7 seconds while Mercedes Benz claims that it accelerates within 6.3 seconds. However, do not think that the GLA being an entry level SUV will not feature advanced functions and controls. Mercedes Benz claims that its standard features will include attention assist, collision control, mbrace2 connectivity apart from diatonic plus cruise control, power lift age, panoramic sunroof and lane keep assistance.

An additional sports package is set to be installed on a higher ranged vehicle while parallel parking and advanced parking technologies are bound to be installed in this car. Although these features are standard on expensive vehicles, Mercedes Benz has confirmed their inclusion in the standard package of their GLA. Without an official price having been confirmed, it is hard to say how much this vehicle will burn a hole in the owner’s pockets.
