The onset of the compact model marks a new important page in the history of Mazda. In this way Mazda is trying to return in force in the compact segment, where currently active big names like the Volkswagen Golf, Renault Megane and Opel Astra operate.
The Mazda3 sedan will have to compete with the Volkswagen Jetta, Renault Fluence and Opel Astra Sedan. The battle will be fought on the markets of Central and Eastern Europe but also in Russia, where such models are in high demand.
The new Japanese model is inspired by the same design language Kodo-Soul of Motion, already inaugurated by the current Mazda6 and CX-5. The new philosophy brings a set of optical blocks somewhat sharp and elongated, like the Mazda6. The grille is also new, as most of the lines up front and rearwards, which give the model an aerodynamic drag coefficient of only 0.27 cX.
With a length of 4465 mm, a width of 1795 mm and a height of 1450 mm, the Mazda3 increased in size. Now it is 5 mm longer, 40 mm wider and 20 mm higher. The wheelbase has also increased by 60 mm to 2700 mm and can now offer more interior space for five passengers. This is also demonstrated in the trunk, whose capacity has been increased from 340 to 350 liters.
Even though it has grown in size, the new Mazda3 is 60 kilograms lighter than the current generation. All thanks to the use of the new SKYACTIV chassis built from high strength steel, but much lighter. The Japanese claim that structural rigidity increased by 30 percent compared to the current model.
The engine range will consist of three petrol units and one diesel. Entry-level will be provided by a new engine with a displacement of 1.5 liters and 100 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 160 Nm at 4000 rpm. The unit guarantees a sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in 10.8 seconds.
The 2.0-liter gasoline unit will be offered in two versions of power. The first will deliver 120 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and make the sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in 8.9 seconds. Maximum speed will be 195 km / h. The second version will have 165 horsepower, enough accelerate to 100 km / h in 8.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 210 km / h.
The only diesel option is a 2.2-liter engine with 150 horsepower at 4500 rpm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in done in 8.1 seconds, and the top speed is 210 km / h. The engines will be available with the standard start-stop system, and the option to be fitted with a SKYACTIV six-speed automatic transmission will also be provided.
Aside from the sedan, Mazda plans to offer a hybrid version of this model. This will have a hybrid ensemble with a petrol engine and an electric one, and will be launched first in Japan’s auto market. Only then will this model be brought to Europe.
