Now, the Clarity range consists of a total of three models. The last two were revealed in the New York Auto Show.
On the outside the new Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid is without the incisions on the front wings that are present on the Clarity Fuel Cell model and on the wing from the driver’s side we get the lid that hides the charging socket for the hybrid system. Otherwise, the model is virtually identical, at least visually.
The underpinning, however, is different and unique in its own way. Being equipped with a 183 horsepower electric motor (torque 314 Nm), and a lithium-ion battery pack 17 kWh, which can be recharged in 2.5 hours at a 240 volt outlet, the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid can travel in pure electric mode about 67 kilometers – a record among its peers. The hybrid is equipped with a highly-efficient 4-cylinder gasoline engine with a displacement of 1.5 liters, which works according to the Atkinson cycle.
The propulsion uniqueness consists in the possibility of the internal combustion engine to only work as a generator to supply power batteries, and in some cases even directly propel the drive wheels, providing a total range of 531 km.
In hybrid version, the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid will consume the equivalent of 2.2 l / 100 km, compared to a conventional car.
The electric version, Clarity Electric, differs by lacking air grille incision, the clear rear lights, and the same lid for the recharging outlet, located on the driver’s side front wing. The new Clarity Electric is a pure electric vehicle equipped with an electric motor of 163 hp (300 Nm torque), and a 25.5 kWh battery pack that provides a combined range of about 180 km.
Is not a huge range, but enough to travel in the city for one day. It should be noted that the Clarity Electric model, however, is a compromise, given the diversification of propulsion systems offered by the Clarity family. Instead, the batteries can be charged in just over 3 hours from a domestic socket, and, filling the batteries to 80 percent through rapid charging stations will only take 30 minutes.
Over the next four years, Honda aims to sell in the US a total of 75,000 electric vehicles from the Clarity family and by 2030 two thirds of global sales of Honda will be electrified vehicles. For this, in 2018 Honda will launch a dedicated hybrid model that will be produced in the US, and later, the idea of three propulsion systems in one model will be used on many other models from Honda. The prices for the new Honda Clarity Electric and Clarity Plug-in Hybrid will start at about 35,000 dollars.
