The appetizing proportions of the concept suggest the A6 GCS, one of the most popular and exclusivist models in the company’s history. Only certain details, such as full LED light strips that take the place of headlamps, almost invisible handles, 21 inch chrome wheels, and fine mirrors prove that the Alfieri is a coupe anchored in the 21st century. Maserati officials reject the idea of a retro style, characterizing the Alfieri as merely a moment of introspection and not a pure nostalgia.
Lorenzo Ramaciotti, design chief, said that “Maserati doesn’t change. Maserati is always Maserati. The Alfieri is a transition point between 100 glorious years of history and the future that is opening up before us. I sincerely can’t say that we’ll see this car in production in two years-time, but I’m certain we’ll see something very similar. We wanted the Alfieri to test future design paths. The car is very aggressive but still sober in style, forceful but understated.”
The Alfieri was created around the transaxle architecture of the Gran Turismo MC Stradale model. That means it will include the V8 engine displacing 4.7 liters and developing 470 horsepower, Brembo ceramic brakes and limited slip differential. The unit delivers that power at 7,000 rpm and an impressive torque figure of 520 Nm at 4750 rpm. Although no mention of impressive resources was made, the Trident’s engineers have managed to get total weight down to only 1,400 kilograms to highlight performance. The wheelbase was reduced by 240 mm (2,700 mm), the 4590 mm in length placing Alfieri on the border between Ghibli and Gran Turismo. A completely new exhaust system completes the artistic side through its spectacular sound with serious overtones, tuned specifically to break the background noise of the Geneva Motor Show.
The prototype on show in Geneva is 100% functional. In what proportion it will influence the future production model remains to be seen. Even Lorenzo Ramaciotti, its creator and head of the Italian design house, characterized it as a study, and not a lightly camouflaged version of the final machine.
Regardless of the connection with the concept shown in Geneva, the Alfieri coupe series version will arrive on the market in maximum two years. It is unclear whether the new model will replace the Gran Turismo or if it will have a separate follower with more generous proportions.
