By presenting in 1996 the V70 XC model Volvo created a successful formula that would later be adopted by the premium segment with the Audi A6 and A4 allroad quattro. In 2017 we will see the first similar proposal offered by Mercedes-Benz on the base of the new E-Class model.
The Cross Country recipe developed by Volvo uses as a base its famous big class model. Besides the generous space and high safety level the Cross Country models have a high ground clearance and four-wheel drive, which offer off-road abilities capable of rivaling SUVs.
Even from the first generation V70 XC marketed between 1997 and 2000, Volvo enjoyed a significant success with this model in the United States. The second generation (2000-2007) would receive an evolved 4 × 4 system, and be renamed XC70 to line up in the range alongside the XC90, the first of Volvo’s SUV.
The third generation (2007-2016) continued the success on the US market which bought almost half of the total production of this versatile model. Also, sales of XC70 received a strong impetus after the model was presented by the famous footballer Zlatan Ibrahimovic in a Volvo advertisement.
Volvo now presents a new generation V90 Cross Country, which has in this consecrated formula all the advantages of the 90 series models: avant-garde design, efficient engines, advanced safety technologies and driving assistance.
Of course, the V90 Cross Country was designed to cope with extreme weather conditions. It is a car designed to cross mud, mountain roads, ice and knee high snow drifts.
The tests during the development of the car were carried out in Sweden, a country known for harsh winters. In northern Sweden temperatures drop to -40 degrees Celsius. But at the same time the V90 Cross Country was tormented in the desert heat of Arizona (more than 50° C).
The Volvo V90 Cross Country combines the resistance to harsh conditions with refinement, comfort and safety that define models in the new 90 series.
Being based on the V90, the new V90 Cross Country is distinguished by modified bumpers elements made of black plastic on the bumpers, doors, sills and wing, the gray inserts at the bottom of the bumpers, the 20 inch rims shod in tires size 245/45 ZR20 with a generous ground clearance, which is 60 mm higher than the V90 station wagon. Thanks to the generous ground clearance the new Volvo V90 Cross Country is extremely impressive!
The interior of the V90 Cross Country is identical to the V90 model. The trunk volume also is identical: 913/1,526 liters (with the seats folded down).
The new Volvo V90 Cross Country will be available with two diesel versions D4 AWD (190 hp and 400 Nm of torque) and D5 AWD PowerPulse (235 hp and 480 Nm), but also with two petrol engines – T5 AWD (254 hp and 350 Nm) and T6 AWD (320 hp and 400 Nm).
The most dynamic is the T6 AWD version. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 240 km / h. Later on the T8 Twin-Engine hybrid version (410 hp and 640 Nm) might be available.
