Citroen Presents Aircross Concept, The C4 Cactus Bigger Brother

The French from Citroen continue to impress us with some of the strangest vehicles in the world, the latest being the Aircross concept. It picks up from the series compact C4 Cactus the special protective elements with a different structure, and applies them to a compact SUV.

The Citroen Aircross Concept is the latest exhibit of the French brand and will debut at the Shanghai Motor Show (22 – 29 April 2015 Press day: 20 and 21 April 2015 for press and VIPs only). The model has a length of 4,580 mm, a width of 2,100 mm and a height of 1,800 millimeters. Bearing a design concept inspired by that of the C4 Cactus, it has 22-inch alloy wheels and has confident aesthetic features. Unlike the C4 Cactus, the Aircross has “alloy bumps” instead of “airbumps”.

Why is a Citroen concept premiere held in China? Because China is the market where the French sold over 25 percent of all their models. For the DS line this region is the most important. Designers of the new Citroen Aircross concept say that drew this model so that it shows sweetness, not aggression.
The Citroen Aircross concept carries forward the ideas presented on the new C4 Catus and is decorated with a series of graphical elements which are at the same time practical : Alloy Bumps, Air Signs and Air Curtains.

Air Signs are chrome elements surrounding each rear door to form a kind of tunnel for airflow allowing the car improved aerodynamics.
The front bumper accommodates the so-called Air Curtains – three air vents that direct air to the engine.

Alloy Bumps are placed on the car doors and protect in case of side impact. Unlike the airbumps on C4 Cactus the new alloy bumps are made of honeycomb-shaped cast aluminum and are covered with rubber. They are larger and more robust to better protect the vehicle against bumps at low speeds, and to make the concept more mature look than the usual C4 Cactus.

The front of the concept seems familiar thanks to the thin headlights reflected by the radiator grille – a solution already present on the C4 Picasso MPV. However, the pillars are painted black to create the illusion of a floating roof and on the sides we have the D-shaped aluminum elements, which are designed to streamline the direction of the airflow to improve fuel consumption.

With regards to the inside of this concept, it is dominated by two touch screens 12 inches in diagonal, one of which can be moved anywhere in the cabin. The French went again to the extreme and implemented speakers and microphones in each seat in order to favor dialogue between passengers.

And if this might be insufficient for someone, Citroen officials announced that two web cameras are mounted on the sides of the cabin, in the door frames, to obtain images while traveling, which then will be spread to social networks.

The concept presented by the French in Shanghai is equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It is based on an 1.6 THP engine rated at 218 hp assisted by an electric motor of 95 horsepower. Under the floor of the vehicle is a lithium-ion battery that provides a range of 50 km with a full charge. From a standard wall socket, the battery is charged from zero to 100 percent in three hours and a half. Citroen announces a total power of 313 hp for the hybrid systems sufficient to accelerate from 0-100 km / h 4.5 seconds, all with a combined fuel consumption of 1.7 liters per 100 km and CO2 emissions of 39 grams per kilometer.
