Then followed decades in which the fate of the event was transformed. In 1999, the BMW Group became the patron of the event and, starting in 2005, the BMW Group Classic joined with Grand Hotel Villa d’Este as the organizer of the rare beauty contest that thousands of enthusiasts and participants worldwide come annually to see.
The motto of this year is “Back to the Future – the Journey Continues” and reflects BMW’s centenary motto “The Next 100 Years”. The most successful premium car manufacturer in the world is using this slogan for its activities in this anniversary year. The concept of the event and displayed models include a combination of tradition and vision. This aura is enhanced by the award granted to the category Concept Cars & Prototypes. It’s a unique distinction which is not found in any other event in the world of vintage cars.
The cars displayed express the creative passion of the most important designers of the moment, along with their perspective on the future. The focus is on the current visions for automotive design in the world of tomorrow, as a counterpoint to the retrospective exhibition of important historical cars. The decision regarding the Concorso d’Eleganza Design Award winner belongs to the public.
BMW Group Classic presents a special exhibition “Hommage and Concept Vehicles” in the Central Pavilion at Villa Erba. The exhibition demonstrates the close relationship that exists between past and present. The concept and homage models of BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad are presented along with their historical replicas, a juxtaposition that highlights the importance of traditional values to develop pioneering design. The center of attention will reflect a continuous 100-year history of the company, and is located on the models that had a significant impact on individual mobility in those times. In a very special way, the BMW Hommage models embody the motto of this year from Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.
Here are some pairs:
BMW 328 Touring Coupe – BMW Concept Coupé Mille Miglia 2006
BMW 328 – BMW 328 Hommage
BMW M1 – BMW M1 Hommage
BMW R 90 S – BMW Concept Ninety
BMW 3.0 CSL – BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage
Mini Cooper S – MINI ACV 30
Along with them, continuing the tradition, the BMW Group will present new prototypes for the first time.
The most important events in the schedule of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2016 are focused on two weekend days (June 20 to 22). The various special exhibitions such as “Hommage and Concept Cars” and “80 Years ago – BMW R 5 – the new Sporting Image” are open to the public continuously.
Sunday the 52 cars involved will be presented and the announcement of winners in each category will take place this afternoon. Among the awards we have prizes decided by the public, like the Concorso d’Eleganza Design Award and BMW Young People’s Award. On Sunday evening, the international specialist jury will award the title “Best of Show”, the highest distinction for cars.
